Sometimes I struggle to find meals that are filling and healthy at the same time. This spicy tuna pasta salad solves that problem. It’s easy to whip up in just 25 minutes, making it perfect for those busy weeknights or unexpected guests.

What I love about this recipe is how simple it is. You just cook the pasta, mix in the tuna and yogurt, add some relish and sriracha, and you’re done! Plus, using Greek yogurt helps keep the dressing from getting too soggy.

Ingredient Notes

Creamy Spicy Tuna Pasta Salad - 2
  • Rotini or Fusilli Pasta: You’ll want to go with either rotini or fusilli because they hold onto that yummy dressing perfectly. If gluten-free is your thing, there are great options out there!
  • Canned Tuna: I like to grab the solid white albacore for a nice texture. Just make sure it’s drained well to keep your salad from getting soggy.
  • Plain Greek Yogurt: This adds creaminess without all the extra fat from mayonnaise. Go for the full-fat kind for the best consistency!
  • Sweet Pickle Relish: It brings that sweet and tangy bite to the party! If you’re not into sweet, try chopped dill pickles for a different flavor kick.
  • Sriracha: This adds a nice heat level to the dish! If sriracha’s not your vibe, feel free to swap it with your favorite hot sauce for a little zing.

Recipe Tips

  • If pasta turns out soggy, rinsing it under cold water right after cooking helps remove excess starch and keeps it from sticking.
  • When the salad tastes a bit bland after chilling, adding extra salt, pepper, or hot sauce before serving can give it a flavorful kick.
  • If the dressing feels too thick, a splash of water or vinegar can help loosen it up, making it easier to mix into the salad.
  • For a better texture, letting the salad chill in the refrigerator for at least one hour allows the flavors to blend nicely.
  • If the pasta seems sticky, rinsing it immediately after cooking helps to separate the noodles, avoiding any clumping issues.

Serving Suggestions

  1. Serve tuna pasta salad alongside grilled chicken or fish for a satisfying meal. Pair it with garlic bread and a crisp salad.
  2. This dish works well as a side at barbecues or picnics. You can enjoy it for lunch or at potlucks with other guests.
  3. Consider adding sauces such as a tangy vinaigrette for extra flavor. A drizzle of lemon juice brightens the dish and adds freshness.

Storage Guidelines

  • To keep your tuna pasta salad fresh, follow these storage tips:
  • Refrigeration: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Check for freshness before serving.
  • Freezing: Place tuna pasta salad in a freezer-safe bag or container. Freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight.
  • Serving Suggestions: When serving leftovers, use fresh herbs or a squeeze of lemon to refresh the flavors before enjoying.

Recipe Variations

  • You can use chickpeas instead of tuna for a vegetarian-friendly option that’s equally filling and flavorful.
  • Add 1 teaspoon garlic powder or 1 tablespoon lemon juice to amp up the flavor profile of your pasta salad.
  • Either use your favorite hot sauce or opt for chili paste to give it a different kind of heat.
  • If serving a larger group, scale up by using 2 lbs of pasta and 4 cans of tuna for a heartier dish.

Equipment

  • Mixing bowls
  • Chef’s knife
  • Measuring spoons
  • Box grater

Ingredients

  • 1 lb uncooked rotini or fusilli pasta use a gluten-free variety if necessary
  • 2 (5 oz) cans tuna drained
  • 1 red bell pepper diced
  • 1 cup grated carrot
  • 1 cup diced celery
  • ½ cup small-dice red onion
  • 1 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 3 tablespoons sweet pickle relish
  • 2-3 tablespoons sriracha or your favourite hot sauce adjust amount to taste
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt or to taste
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  • Start by boiling your rotini or fusilli pasta until it is al dente. You will know it is ready when it has a slight bite and looks glossy. Rinsing the pasta under cold water helps stop the cooking and keeps it from clumping. Avoid overcooking, as it will turn mushy.
  • Add the drained tuna to a large mixing bowl. Let it spread out and break it into smaller chunks with a fork. This helps it meld well into the salad while avoiding over mixing, which can turn it into paste.
  • Toss in the diced red bell pepper, grated carrot, diced celery, and red onion. Enjoy the colorful mix and the fresh crunch. While the onion adds needed zing, do not overdo it or it may overpower the other flavors.
  • In another bowl, stir together the Greek yogurt, mayonnaise, sweet pickle relish, sriracha, apple cider vinegar, sea salt, and black pepper. This will yield a creamy, zesty dressing. If it seems too thick, a little splash of water will help, but be cautious not to make it too runny.
  • Gently fold the cooked pasta into the tuna and veggie mixture, pouring the dressing as you go. The salad should start to look creamy and inviting. Be careful to mix lightly to avoid breaking down the pasta.
  • Place the salad in the fridge for about one hour. This allows all the flavors to blend beautifully. After chilling, taste and adjust the seasoning, as chilling can sometimes mute the flavors.

Notes

Store any leftovers in a sealed container in the refrigerator and consume within 4 days.
If the pasta turns out soggy, rinsing under cold water soon after cooking helps remove excess starch and prevents sticking. When the salad tastes bland after chilling, add extra salt, pepper, or hot sauce before serving for a flavorful boost. If the dressing is too thick, a splash of water or vinegar can help loosen it for easier mixing. Allowing the salad to chill for at least one hour enables the flavors to meld well together.
